A la Magicienne by Jules Cheret (France, 1875) Advertising Poster
Jules Chéret (1836-1932) is known as the creator of the modern poster. The son of a typographer, he studied lithography at what is now the school of Beaux Arts in Paris.
After travels to Rome and London, he opened his first lithography workshop in Paris in 1866. Here he created hundreds of posters and developed his characteristically Parisian style which seemed to signify France’s transition from the era of the Second Empire into the modern world.
From 1895 he also designed interiors for private homes and public buildings. Today his posters remain as relics of the Parisian “Belle Epoque” and such famous locations as the Folies Bergère.
